Relationship Counselling supports you as you investigate the beliefs and values you hold, the narratives that guide your decisions, and your own personal dictionary of emotional understandings which shape the way you relate to the people around you. Because we all move through life guided by this completely unique set of characteristics and perspectives, it can be challenging to navigate interpersonal waters. Working with people individually or in partnership, I can help you navigate the map from where you are to where you want to be.
Why is this important?
Our relationships, whether they are romantic, platonic, family, or indefinable, are central to our health and sense of wellbeing. We are social creatures who depend on healthy interpersonal connections to feel safe and at ease.
What will we do?
When we work together, I will help you uncover the personal constellation of stories, beliefs, and values that are guiding you in relationships, and we will discover the tools and steps that will allow your connections to thrive.
We will explore what's really important to you, and how to create the map that will allow you to reach your goals and ideals throughout your life.
With people seeing me for relationship work with a partner or partners, I tailor my approach to the specific relationship and the goals you come in with. We may work through some of the tools and processes outlined by the Gottman Method (supported by decades of science studying the longitudinal success of romantic relationships); we may work through the ND Compass (a neurodiverse partnership-specific approach to couples therapy); and in any case we will be exploring your relationship using an overall integrated approach that harvests from many disciplines. I am trained in the Developmental Model of couples therapy which understands that relationships go through distinct developmental stages, and this framework is a powerful way of meeting partnerships where they're at.
When do I come to see you?
Relationship counselling can assist in day to day life, future planning, or acutely through transitions such as new cohabitation, and changes to family dynamics such as blending families or experiencing separation or divorce.
In our romantic relationships we espouse different love languages, sexual appetites, and beliefs about our erotic natures, so it's no wonder that challenges can present themselves!
In our work together I can support you as you learn to ask for what you want, how to listen and negotiate, and how to get comfortable with these conversations whether you are partnered or not.
